Next to seeing the land and meeting the people, gastronomy is the next best way to get to know a new country by using your senses of taste and smell. This is especially the case when it comes to wine. Visiting local vineyards during your travels gives you the opportunity to indulge in the ingredients that are native to the land and provides you with an exclusive culinary experience you will not be able to find at home. (Or anywhere else for that matter!) Though difficult to narrow down, below we have listed some of our favorite vineyards around the world.

1. Matetic Vineyards, Chile

Planted in 1999, the vineyard can be found in Rosario Valley between Casablanca and San Antonio. This location has ideal conditions for red and white grape varieties. The granitic soils that are rich in quartz and the proximity to the ocean help the grapes to ripen slowly which produces healthier fruits, a determining factor in producing wines with a sense of place.

2. Chateau De Carbonnieux, France

Located in Pessac-Leognan, the land has been home to vines for 7 centuries dating back to the year 1234. With this, the vines have shaped and evolved the sub-soil of the domain appellation to create a completely unique to the well-aged vineyard. There is also an extensive history of owners and guests, including a visit from Thomas Jefferson in 1786 who planted an American Pecan tree that you can still find on the property today!

3. Franschhoek Country House & Villas, South Africa

Known as the birthplace of fine South African wines, Franschhoek Valley has a number of excellent boutique wine farms. Here guests can stay in the heart of it all with a choice of luxury rooms, garden cottages, or villa suites. This spot is the ideal base to explore the world-class wine lands offering tours that range from horseback rides to the Franschhoek wine tram.

Our travels started back in March of 2020. Our trip started and included a great week in Tahiti then New Zealand. Although that’s when Covid exploded while we were there in Tahiti. That’s when we found out they had closed the border into NZ. Thankfully we had Esplanade to get us back home. We finally got back on track to New Zealand this March. We had a full itinerary planned. When we arrived, we had a driver waiting for us to take us to our Glamorous hotel with a great view of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the Mountains in the background. We traveled to Milford Sound by bus then traveled thru out the scenic Milford Sound. Then they flew us back to our hotel. Another trip was on a Steamboat that took us to Farm. We had a great dinner there and tour of the farm that included the sheep dogs working the sheep. We could go on and on about this trip. The people from NZ our super nice. This trip was great from start to finish. Truly a bucket list trip. Esplanade will definitely be our choice for international travel, without a doubt. <br />
