Zambia in the Emerald Season
ZAMBIA IN THE EMERALD SEASON - November to Mid May
The Emerald Season runs from November to mid May. At the start of the rains, the river is so low we can walk across and the valley is dry and dusty. As the rains fall, from occasional storms (Nov/Dec) to storms passing through most nights (Jan/Feb), and then abating again (March/April) the bush changes to a dramatic vibrant green. At the peak, the lagoons are brimming and the river is full. In 2007 the river flooded for the first time in 29 years
As this is not the peak season we are able to put together specialist safaris along with the packaged safaris and of course the rate is excellent value. Or you can book any dates that suit you.
EMERALD SEASON OFFERS WITH ROBIN POPE SAFARIS
River Journeys (22 January – 31 March)
From $2750 per person sharing (single supplement $500 per night at Nsefu if no other travelers for days stayed)
This 7 day safari combines Robin Pope Safaris Nkwali and Nsefu Camps.
At Nkwali you will drive, walk and boat. Most of the game in this area remains resident all year and so the game viewing is always excellent and hopefully sees wild dog, as it is the top viewing season for the dogs. After a few nights you will boat slowly up the Luangwa River to Nsefu, bird watching and game viewing on the way. The transfer is around 3 hours.
At Nsefu the emphasis will be on exploring the flooded ebony groves and lagoon system, flowing channels and tributaries by boat. There will also be excellent walking, including a boat and walking combination to reach one of southern Africa’s largest yellow billed stork colonies in full action.
